Ecclesiates or The Preacher. Small 8vo, 19cm, The Riverside Press for Houghton Mifflin Co, Boston & New York, 1911.
Set in Caslon and printed at Riverside Press by Bruce Rogers in red and black on English handmade paper. One of 335 copies. A fine copy.
(Warde 112, Kent 213) "Tory's woodcut borders were never more gracefully used than in the Ecclesiastes, printed in 1911." (Warde) "Bound in boards covered with Chinese vermillion paper, the title stamped on the side in gold, the outside of the small octavo is of imperial aspect. Upon opening he book one finds its grandeur is sustained ... The repressed magnifice of quiet Tory borders enclose the text set in Caslon type. It was the last important book printed at the Riverside Press." (Douglas Hoxey Smith) The book is easily damaged, but this ccopy is virtually mint, together with the four-page prospectus. One of BR's 'chosen thirty'.
