Printmaker, book illustrator, painter, Stefan
Mrozewski (1894-1975), spent his childhood in the coal mining region of Poland.
He studied art from an early age, eventually becoming a student at the Warsaw
School of Fine Arts. He excelled at stained glass, mural painting and pastel.
He lived mostly abroad, doing much book illustration. He created his own style
and his productions are marked by a diversity of form and content. Their
texture rests on a mastery of the multiple graver, resulting formidable arrays
of black and grey. He is exceptional as a wood engraver insofar as he was an
enthusiastic portraitist. His works are in several permanent collections in
Europe and North America.
