Specimen Book and Catalogue 1923. Royal 8vo, 26cm, pp.1148, American Type Founders Company, Jersey City, N.J., 1923.
One of 60,000 copies printed in black, blue and reddish-brown entirely from type and brass rules; extensive use of ornaments and occasional use of different paper stocks with a great many advertisements, etc., for type display. Quarter natural linen with black spine titling, blue paper-covered boards, titled in black, decorative endpapers. Spine a little browned. A very good copy.
ATF's "Big Blue" is an astonishing achievement by Morris Benton - not so much a type catalogue as "an encyclopaedia of typographic styles". Especially spectacular are displays of Garamond, Goudy, Harris Roman, Bodoni. It was the last of the large ATF catalogues.
