To the Right Honourable Lord Stanhope.... [Text from dedication to Stower's, Printer's Grammar, 1808.] Large poster, 70 X 51cm, Cambridge University Press, n.d.(?1939).
Set in Bell type and printed with flerouns as a border surround on fine wove paper. Slight dust-soiling and edgewear. A very good copy.
With a presentation inscription at the top left: "S.M. [Stanley Morison] This is a proof of what we propose to affix to the Stanhope Press in the Entrance Hall BC [Brooke Crutchley]." The date, other than general appearance is little more than a guess. The Bell type had been revived by SM in the 1920s, BC taken on at CUP in the mid-thirties, 1939 was the centenary of Lafy Hester Stanhope's death. The paper has the appearance of manufacture around 1940.
