Typography. The written word and the printed word. Some tests for types. Concerning printers' flowers. The pioneer work of the Pelican Press. The points of a wellmade book. A glossary of printers' terms. Type specimens. A display of bordrers and initials. [By Francis Meynell.] Royal 8vo, 26cm, Folding title + xlv + 20 + [8] + folding plates, Printed and prepared by the Pelican Press, Carmelite Street, London, 1923.

Printed in blue, red, brown and black, decorated with borders, specimens and initials. Four illustrations. Blue buckram boards with printed spine label. Rubbed at extremities with spine label chipped. A good copy.

The first issue of this book, five hundred copies were printed on japon vellum. 'The Written Word and the Printed Word' is actually by Stanley Morison - with (very possibly unauthorized) alterations by Francis Meynell. There was a second printing on Basingwerk Parchment in 1927 with soe additional typefaces - but this is the better and more striking edition. Indeed, it is probably the best English type specimen book of the period.
