The Flower of Peace. A Collection of the Devotional Poetry of Katharine Tynan. 8vo, 17cm, p.vii[1], 102, ads, Printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & co, for Bburns and Oates, London, 1914.
Set in Caslon and printed in black and red on handmade paper with decorative ornament, fleurons and an elaborate "herbacious" title-page border. Engraved frontispiece after Giotto. De luxe binding of full stiff vellum, titled in gilt, elaborately blocked in gilt with printers' flowers, gilt top, others uncut. A very good to fine copy.
Most handsome, and though nowhere acknowledged clearly designed by Stanley Morison and Francis Meynell. There is a passage in FM's "My Lives" that has a bearing: 'Other Burns & oates books of this time [1914] were a book of short stories, The goddess of Ghosts, by C.C. Martindale, which had on its title-page a border of printer's flowers (or fleurons) - a style of decoration that almost became a signature of Morison's and my typographic work = and pretty editions of Katharine Tynan and G.K. Chesterton, both friends of my parents.'
