Thomas Bewick Birds: Being impressions from original wood-blocks. 8vo, 25cm, Title + 4p Notes + 24 loose engravings, Newcastle: David Esslemont, 1984.
One of an unstated number of copies with 24 engravings, printed one to the page, on fine wove paper and tissue-guarded (there is also a bound edition of 250 copies with 30 impressions). Quarter linen box with marbled paper-covered sides, predominantly green, biscuit and gold, gilt title label superimposed on the front. A fine copy.
This selection of engravings, from the collection in Newcastle Central Library, represents all but a few of the blocks used in Bewick's Bird. They are presented in more or less chronological order as they first appeared, 1797 to 1826. This portfolio of engravings was produced shortly before David Esslemont's move to Gwasg Gregynog.
